In Australia, domestic violence is a pervasive issue, with one woman losing her life to it every week and one in four experiencing abuse from an intimate partner. Traditional funding approaches often focus only on crisis intervention, leaving a gap in providing long-term support and empowerment for women facing domestic violence. This lack of comprehensive support prevents women from regaining their power and independence.
Luma, a not-for-profit organization in Australia dedicated to women's health and wellbeing, launched the HER Board initiative, a sponsorship-based fundraising effort. This initiative encourages both individuals and corporations to donate $99 per month over a 12-month term, directly empowering women to change their situations. Funds are allocated to essential services such as relocation, counseling, transport, legal aid, security, healthcare, employment assistance, and childcare. HER Board gives women the power to choose which services to utilize, moving away from the victim-savior model and providing comprehensive, wrap-around support tailored to individual needs. The initiative also targets professional sectors through LinkedIn to garner attention and support from executives.
HER Board has successfully attracted influential support and raised awareness about the importance of empowering women through choice and comprehensive support. The initiative launched its campaign during Domestic Violence Prevention Month with strong backing from influential female leaders like Rose Herceg and Katie Rigg-Smith. By employing a predominantly female team led by director Melle Branson for the initiative's film assets, the campaign resonated deeply with its audience. HER Board not only provides essential services to women in need but also fosters a community-driven approach to tackling domestic violence, aiming for a continued impact throughout 2024 and beyond.
