This summer, Selfridges launches Sportopia, inviting shoppers to put down their shopping bags and instead opt to ascend a 40 ft climbing column or try on football merch at Snapchat’s Augmented Reality (AR) Locker Room. Over July and August, the UK department store transforms its London, Manchester and Birmingham locations into sporting venues, encouraging visitors to socialize and play.

“We are ready for a huge celebration of sport at Selfridges this summer,” Laura Weir, chief creative at Selfridges says in a release. “Sportopia presents a universe of leisure and recreation, inspired in turn by major international sporting events, by local, grassroots sporting communities and by the fascinating culture of brand and fandom.”

Airbnb revealed one of its summer travel trends is play-based stays, with searches for the “play” category more than doubling this summer on its platform. Destinations making it to people’s wishlists include a rainforest chalet with waterslides and waterfalls in Ilhabela, Brazil, a seaside cabin with an outdoor trampoline in Orø, Denmark, and a converted bath house with a bowling alley in Hastings, UK.

In June, tennis star Rafael Nadal partnered with Meliá Hotels International for the opening of Zel Costa Brava in Spain. The property features 214 rooms and offers a range of sports activities including tennis, water sports, and basketball. This follows its first eponymous hotel which opened in Mallorca last year. Forthcoming Zel hotels include Madrid, Sayulita (Mexico), and Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) in 2025.

Meanwhile, in Paris, the Louvre will unite sports and arts with a cultural program designed around Olympic themes inviting visitors to join sports tours, muscle-building, yoga, and more. In the months leading up to the Games, the museum also curated a series of morning activities called Courez au Louvre which included dancing and exercising amongst the artworks.

As summer kicks off, play, activities, and experiences are key criteria for vacation choices, aligning with the forthcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
