Frontend Engineering Manager needed to join our team here at VML Budapest.
What you’ll be doing:
- Line management of our Front-End team including conducting career development reviews, providing career guidance and performance management.
- Developing talent and nurturing innovation within our teams by holding chapter events and encouraging common approaches and knowledge transfer between our projects, focussing on advanced FE techniques and patterns.
- Working with our FE technical leads to encourage the adoption of new technologies and to constantly improve our existing ways of working.
- Management of resourcing across projects, matching and assigning team members to appropriate roles, attending resourcing meetings and liaising with our Account Directors, Project and Programme managers as appropriate.
- Making smart team assignments by assigning, directing, and evaluating the work of our FE team on their various projects and overseeing the development and maintenance of staff competence.
- Recruiting talent for your team: selection, testing, interviewing and maintaining the right employee blend
- Team development and staff retention through hiring, mentoring (including succession planning) as well as the planning L&D strategy for your team and working with our People team to ensure it is delivered.
- Creating standards, processes and reference solutions for the engineering and technical work performed in the department in conjunction with the Head of Commerce Engineering
- Perform administrative functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenses, undertaking contract reviews, and making decisions about the purchase of tools or 3rd party services.
- Supporting our presales team including presenting and explaining our skills/approaches and delivering proposals, reports, and findings to clients.
- Set strategic and technical goals to support objectives provided by senior management.
- In conjunction with your teams identify and set out best practice guidelines and reviewing team output to ensure adherence and consistency.
- Promote the benefits of good Front End engineering practices and act as a champion for the engineering team both within VML Budapest, the wider VML Enterprise Solution organisation and externally.
- Review and challenge our processes to help us continually improve efficiency and quality
- Ensuring all team members have appropriate certification and maintain a register of skills for the team.
What we want from you:
- Excellent understanding of the process, challenges and pitfalls of delivering Front End projects, particularly around head full implementations in Contentful, Shopify, Sitecore, Drupal,
- In depth knowledge of development practices within the Software Delivery Lifecycle, ideally within a Commerce environment
- Experience of leading and managing Front End developers
- Experience in interviewing and assessment of candidates at all levels, ensuring both technical capability and person fit to create high functioning, happy teams
- Ability to drive change in a given programme or project and be able to articulate the benefits of change
- Be an advocate for quality processes and understand industry recognised Best Practices
- Be experienced in code and unit test reviews and have experience of using static analysis tools and make recommendations in this area
- Have a good knowledge of Agile development delivery practices and how these affect your team
- Have strong communication skills and can work with customers and internal stakeholders to ensure the Engineering team vision is understood and implemented correctly.
- Being an adaptable, proactive, opinionated quick thinker who can deliver under pressure when needed
- The ability to motivate a team, recognise rising talent and bring out the best out of each individual
- Excellent communicator, influencing skills and negotiation skills to get management buy-in on ideas and concepts
- Having a can-do attitude and picking up whichever tasks help our teams and projects, self-motivated and enthusiastic
- Excellent planning and work prioritisation skill
- The ability to remain calm in high pressured environments

- Experience working with differing delivery methodologies including Agile, Hybrid and Waterfall Approach
- Experience of managing suppliers and have evidence of increasing the value received
- Development background or hands-on experience of front end development
